Porsche Boxster S 3.2: Specs, Engine Codes, ECUs & Maintenance

Boxster S 3.2 · M96

The first Boxster S uses a 3.2-litre port-injected flat-six and a six-speed manual as standard. The 987 version raised output to 280 hp for 2005–2006. Its engine codes and bearing revisions matter more for servicing than the S badge alone.

Common issues & maintenance

IMS bearing

Bearing failure is a documented concern. Early bearing types and later enlarged internal bearings require different repair approaches; identify the engine build.

Air/oil separator

A failing diaphragm can produce excessive crankcase vacuum, smoke or running faults. Measure vacuum and rule out other causes.

Ignition coils

Cracked coil housings can admit moisture and cause misfires. Inspect plugs and coils using Porsche diagnosis guidance.

Use the VIN-specific Porsche-approved oil, maintain the correct level and warm the oil before high rpm. Check service history and investigate smoke, misfires or rising oil use promptly. Bearing design follows the installed engine, especially on cars with replacement engines.
