BMW N52 3.0: Specs, Engine Codes, ECUs & Maintenance

N52
3.0 · Naturally aspirated · Valvetronic inline-six
The N52 combines a lightweight magnesium-aluminium crankcase with variable valve lift. Its smooth, linear delivery comes from breathing control and intake tuning, with several factory outputs from the same basic 3.0-litre layout.

Engine controllers · MSV70, MSV80 & MSV90
The MSV family controls Valvetronic lift, VANOS timing, ignition and port injection. The N52K and later N52T revisions brought different DME hardware and interfaces; horsepower alone does not identify them.
| Controller | Applications & timing | Technical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| MSV70 | Original N52: E90 325i/330i (2006), E60 525i/530i (2006–2007), and early N52 Z4/X3 applications | Initial N52 electronics, including variable valve lift and electric coolant-pump control. |
| MSV80 | N52K/KP: E9x 328i from 2007, E60 528i (2008–2010), E70 X5 3.0si (2007–2010) | Revised digital air-mass meter and throttle interfaces. Hardware and engine-harness differences prevent treating it as an MSV70 software update. |
| MSV90 | N52T: F10 528i (2011) and F25 X3 xDrive28i (2011–2012) | Later controller used with the N52T and F-series vehicle electronics. Separate software family from MSV80. |
A 328i badge may also identify an N51 SULEV engine. Confirm the engine/emissions label, DME hardware number and software before selecting parts or a calibration.

The 325i name does not mean a 2.5-litre engine in these U.S. applications. Intake hardware, emissions version and calibration determine the factory rating.
Common issues & key risks
Electric water pump. Pump failure can produce a loud cooling fan, temperature warnings and reduced power. Read pump faults and check circulation and thermostat operation before continued driving.
Oil leaks & PCV. Valve-cover and filter-housing seals leak with age. Later plastic covers also contain the breather; whistling, rough idle or abnormal crankcase vacuum can point to PCV failure.
Eccentric-shaft sensor. Oil contamination at the sensor connector can cause Valvetronic faults, rough running or a no-start. BMW specifies checking the sensor and associated wiring for oil.
VANOS faults. Dirty or faulty solenoids can affect cam control; persistent faults may also involve oil supply or cam-bearing-ledge wear. Test before replacing parts.
DISA mechanisms. On engines with the variable-length intake, failed flap mechanisms can cause rattles and reduced torque. Confirm the fitted intake version before ordering parts.
Keep it consistent: Use the oil approval in the vehicle handbook, maintain oil level and cooling-system condition, and investigate warning lights before continued hard use.
