Ecotec 2.0 Turbo · LTG
The LTG gives the Terrain a lively 252-hp option and also powers GM sedans and coupes. Direct injection, variable cam timing and a twin-scroll turbo make this four-cylinder feel larger than its 2.0-liter displacement.

Engine controllers
| Application / revision | ECM or PCM | Identification & function |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier LTG sedans | GM E39 / E39A family | Direct-injection fuel pressure, boost, spark and cam timing. Match the service number and original operating system. |
| Later cars and Terrain | GM E80 | Different module family; EFI Connection documents 2016–2017 ATS, CTS, CT6, Camaro and Malibu applications. Terrain gasoline builds use E80; identify the exact revision from the installed module. |
Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.
Common issues & maintenance
- Early piston damageGM documented cracked pistons on selected early ATS and Malibu builds. A persistent misfire or low compression deserves a compression/leak-down test; the bulletin does not establish that all LTGs fail.
- Cold-weather loss of boostWater freezing in the charge-air cooler can produce reduced power and misfire/boost codes on affected Terrain applications. Follow the applicable GM repair and calibration procedure.
- Cam timing and oil supplySelected early builds had intake cam actuator concerns. Low oil, contamination and electrical faults can also produce timing codes; diagnose the cause before replacing a chain.
- Boost leaks and ignitionSplit ducts, loose clamps, worn plugs or a weak coil can mimic a bad turbo. Check these before authorizing a turbocharger replacement.
Keep it healthy. Use the specified dexos-approved oil, check its level between services and follow the oil-life system and the severe-use schedule for your model. Keep the cooling and charge-air systems leak-free, replace plugs on schedule and diagnose misfires before driving under boost. Intake cleaning should follow an inspection and symptoms, rather than an automatic mileage rule.
