Ecotec 2.4L LAF & LEA
The LAF and flex-fuel LEA power the first-generation Terrain and Equinox. Direct injection and variable cam timing improve efficiency, but oil consumption and the timing system deserve particular attention on these engines.

Engine construction
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Capacity / layout | 2.4L · inline-four |
| Construction | Aluminum block and head |
| Valve gear / timing | DOHC · 16 valves · chain-driven |
| Fuel / induction | Direct injection · naturally aspirated |
| Cam control | Variable intake and exhaust timing |
| Fuel capability | LAF gasoline · LEA flex-fuel where equipped |
Codes & output
| RPO / version | Power / torque | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| LAF | 182 hp / 172 lb-ft | Terrain / Equinox gasoline rating |
| LEA | 182 hp / 172 lb-ft | Gasoline rating; flex-fuel calibration |
SAE horsepower; torque in lb-ft. Ratings are for the stated application and fuel, rather than every vehicle with this RPO.
Vehicles & model years
| Brand | Model | Model years | Platform / chassis | Engine RPO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GMC / Chevrolet | Terrain / Equinox | 2010–2011 | Theta | LAF |
| GMC / Chevrolet | Terrain / Equinox | 2012–2017 | Theta | LEA |
| Chevrolet | Orlando, Canada only | 2012–2014; verify RPO | Delta II | LAF |
U.S. and Canadian applications within the 2005–2026 matrix scope. Engine availability depends on trim, build date and emissions certification.
Engine controllers
| Application / revision | ECM or PCM | Identification & function |
|---|---|---|
| LAF / early LEA | GM E39 ECM | Direct-injection pressure, dual cam timing, throttle and torque control |
| Later LEA builds | GM E39/E39A family; verify ID | Hardware and operating-system changes require the exact VIN and service number |
Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.
Common issues & maintenance
- Excessive oil consumptionGM issued VIN-specific coverage for piston-ring-related consumption on selected vehicles. Measure consumption, inspect PCV operation and keep the sump full; low oil can cause secondary timing damage.
- Timing-chain / cam-control faultsStartup rattle or cam/crank correlation codes require oil-pressure, actuator and chain checks. A code alone does not establish which component failed.
- PCV restriction in cold weatherA restricted crankcase ventilation path can raise pressure and promote oil leakage. Check the ventilation passages when cold-weather leaks or consumption appear.
Keep it healthy. Check oil level frequently between services, particularly if consumption is known. Use the specified dexos oil and respond early to rattling or a persistent misfire. Follow the exact fuel label; flex-fuel capability cannot be inferred from displacement.
