Smooth delivery is the M54’s signature. Its aluminium construction, variable intake and double VANOS give BMW’s six-cylinder sedans, roadsters and SUVs useful torque without a turbocharger.

The DME controls injection, ignition, electronic throttle, intake switching and both VANOS camshafts. An M54 engine code alone does not identify the electronics: the chassis and production date also matter.

MS45 and MS45.1 are distinct versions. Confirm the ECU label, BMW part number and software identification; model-year ranges above describe applications, not universal changeover dates.

Common issues & key risks
Cooling-system leaks. Ageing expansion tanks, hose connections and pump seals can lose coolant. Investigate low levels or temperature changes promptly; overheating can turn a small leak into engine damage.
Crankcase ventilation. Failed CCV diaphragms and brittle hoses cause vacuum leaks, rough idle and increased oil use. Check the complete breather system and intake boots.
DISA intake flap. The flap and operating lever wear, causing rattling and weak low-speed response. Inspect loose components before they break apart.
VANOS seals. Worn seals reduce cam-control pressure, often softening low-rpm torque or causing hesitation. Check cam operation alongside intake leaks.
Oil leaks. Valve-cover and oil-filter-housing seals are regular leak points; the VANOS feed line can also seep. Trace wet areas and repair oil contamination around the belt.
Keep it consistent: Use the oil approval specified in the vehicle handbook, maintain the cooling system and adjust service intervals for operating conditions.
