N47

2.0 diesel · Strong low-speed torque, compact package

The North American N47TU brings diesel pulling power to the 328d and X3 28d. Its single variable-geometry turbo and common-rail injection work with a sophisticated emissions system, all coordinated by Bosch EDC17 electronics.

BMW calls its diesel ECU the DDE. It controls injection quantity and timing, rail pressure, turbo vane position, EGR and regeneration. North American emissions software also supervises DEF/SCR operation, with NOx and particulate sensors communicating through their own electronics.

ControllerApplications & timingTechnical distinction
EDC17C50 / EDC17C56Early North American applications, typically 2014–2015TC1797-based EDC17 generation. Service and programming catalogues can group these variants together; read the actual Bosch number and DDE identification.
EDC17C76 · DDE 7.4.2Later 328d applications, typically 2016–2018; installation varies by modelTC1793-based revision with different hardware/software; not a direct substitute for the earlier DDE.

Identify the installed controller before choosing parts or software. Record the Bosch number, BMW DDE version, software level and injector correction data; do not rely on a generic “EDC17” description.

Common issues & key risks

EGR-cooler leaks. Internal coolant leakage can combine with soot and create a fire risk on affected vehicles. Investigate unexplained coolant loss and check completion of the applicable recall by VIN.

Timing-chain wear. Rear-mounted chains and guides are a known N47-family concern. Persistent rear-of-engine rattles need specialist inspection; risk varies with build and revision, so inspect the fitted chain system.

Thermostat & DPF problems. Low operating temperature, short journeys and unresolved engine faults can prevent regeneration. Check temperature and exhaust-pressure readings before replacing a soot-loaded filter.

NOx & emissions sensors. Failed NOx sensors can trigger SCR warnings. Confirm sensor readings, wiring and DEF dosing; BMW issued coverage for eligible applications.

EGR deposits & intake flaps. Soot and oil deposits can restrict airflow or hinder flap movement. Inspect the intake and EGR system when performance drops or airflow faults return.

Glow-system faults. Hard cold starts or rough warm-up need checks of glow plugs, their controller and supply wiring. Repair underlying faults that can also interfere with emissions operation.

Keep it consistent: Use the approved low-ash oil for the VIN, maintain DEF quality and review oil intervals against operating conditions. Clean intake components when inspection supports it.
