Twin-turbo V12 · Quiet delivery, deep reserves
The N74 combines V12 smoothness with strong low-speed boost. Its 6.0- and 6.6-litre versions use different generations of electronics, with a dedicated controller for each bank and substantial changes in the M760i update.

Engine controllers · MSD87-12 and Bosch MG1
The 6.0-litre engine uses Continental/Siemens MSD87-12 electronics. The 6.6-litre technical update moves to Bosch’s modular DME platform. Both use coordinated bank controllers; the later units are water-cooled through the charge-air cooling circuit.

Confirm the installed U1/U2 engine revision and both DME identifiers on facelift cars. Market and emissions specifications can differ; a generic “M760i ECU” listing is insufficient for replacement.

Common issues & key risks
Internal coolant-pipe leaks. Transfer-pipe seals can deteriorate with age. Pressure-test persistent coolant loss and inspect the engine valley and pipe connections before replacing unrelated components.
Crankcase ventilation. Failed pressure-control components can cause whistling, rough idle or increased oil consumption. Measure crankcase pressure and inspect hoses and seals.
Ignition misfires. Worn plugs and failing coils can cause hesitation, particularly under load. Early N74s also had a spark-plug service action; confirm build applicability and repair history.
Oil & turbo-area leaks. Check cover seals and turbo oil/coolant connections when levels fall or burning smells appear. Identify whether smoke comes from an external leak or the exhaust.
Fuel-pressure faults. Hard starts and bank-specific misfires need low- and high-pressure fuel tests. Compare both banks and check electrical supply before choosing pumps, injectors or controllers.
Keep it consistent: Use the correct BMW oil approval and maintain cooling-system condition. Record both controller identities and service history to make future diagnosis more efficient.
