The MSS60 coordinates eight throttles, double VANOS, injection and ignition. A distinctive feature is ion-current combustion monitoring: electronics in the ignition coils support knock and misfire assessment through the spark plugs.

Common issues & key risks

Rod-bearing wear. One of the principal S65 ownership risks. Review bearing-replacement history and discuss inspection with an experienced specialist; normal oil pressure or a quiet idle cannot rule out wear.

Throttle actuators. Worn gears and failed electronics in either bank’s actuator can trigger reduced power and throttle-position faults. Test both actuators and their wiring.

Valve-cover leaks. Cover gaskets leak, and the magnesium covers themselves can deteriorate. Burning-oil smells or wet cover edges warrant checking the cover as well as the seal.

Idle-control actuator. A sticking or failed idle actuator can cause hunting, stalling or idle-control faults. Check air leaks and actuator operation before replacing parts.

Cooling & lubrication. Investigate rising temperatures and oil leaks promptly. Use the specified oil and bring it to operating temperature before high rpm.

Keep it consistent: Use the BMW-specified engine oil, allow oil temperature to stabilize before high rpm and shorten service intervals when operating conditions justify it.
