Ford Duratec 20 2.0L: Specs, PCM & Maintenance
Ford · Gasoline engine
Duratec 202.0L · Port injection
The early Duratec 20 gives the North American Focus a simple, naturally aspirated four-cylinder package: an aluminium engine, chain-driven cams and port injection. Its emissions version matters as much as its badge when selecting parts or a replacement PCM.

Vehicles & factory output
| Engine variant | Vehicle | Model years | Platform | Factory rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duratec 20 | Ford Focus | 2005–2007 | C170 | 136 hp / 136 lb-ft* |
| Duratec 20E | Ford Focus PZEV | 2005–2007 | C170 | 130 hp / 129 lb-ft* |
*2007 Ford brochure ratings. Earlier model-year ratings can differ; PZEV calibration and emissions equipment must match the car.
Engine controller
| Application | Supplier & family | Hardware / identification |
|---|---|---|
| Focus · 2005–2007 | Ford Black Oak PCM | Ford’s 2005 engineering guide names Black Oak; match PZEV and transmission calibration. |
| Transit Connect · 2010–2013 | FoMoCo EEC-V catalogue family | Separate vehicle calibration; not a Focus plug-in replacement. |
Match the complete Ford engineering/service number, supplier hardware ID and diagnostic strategy/calibration ID. The same engine size can use different modules; processor names alone do not identify an ECU.
Catalogue entries identify application families, not a guaranteed ECU for every build year. Confirm the installed unit.
Common faults & maintenance
- Misfires. Check plug wear, coil connections and cylinder-specific fault data before replacing the PCM.
- Air leaks. PCV and intake leaks can cause lean running and unstable idle; verify with fuel trims and a leak test.
- Cooling and leaks. Inspect coolant hoses, thermostat operation and oil leaks during service. Stop and diagnose overheating promptly.
Keep it healthy. Use the Ford oil specification and viscosity for the exact model year. Follow the normal or severe-use schedule for towing, extended idling, dust and repeated short trips; check oil and coolant between services. Diagnose deposits or poor running before prescribing cleaning intervals.

Listed vehicles are selected North American applications. Ratings and equipment vary with model year, fuel and emissions specification. Verify the VIN, engine label and PCM identification before ordering parts or software. Service bulletins describe affected conditions and do not establish a failure rate or current warranty entitlement.
