Ford Triton 5.4L 3V: Specs, PCM, Cam Phasers & Maintenance
Ford · Gasoline engine
Triton 5.4LThree-valve Modular V8
The three-valve 5.4L delivers strong low-speed truck torque. Its spark-plug design and oil-operated cam timing make service history especially valuable when assessing an older F-150.

Vehicles & factory output
| Engine variant | Vehicle | Model years | Platform | Factory rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.4L 3V Triton | Ford F-150 | 2004–2008 | P2 | 300 hp / 365 lb-ft |
| Later 5.4L 3V · gasoline | Ford F-150 | 2009–2010 | P415 | 310 hp / 365 lb-ft |
The selected gasoline ratings are shown. Flex-fuel ratings on later trucks can differ; use the model-year specification and fuel type.
Engine controller
| Application | Supplier & family | Hardware / identification |
|---|---|---|
| F-150 · earlier 5.4L 3V applications | FoMoCo EEC-VI catalogue family | Match the Ford module number and tear tag. |
| Later F-150 5.4L hardware | Bosch ME(D)G9.8.1 / MEDG9.8 catalogue group | BitBox and Alientech use related naming; exact suffix requires a read. |
| Expedition 5.4L applications | Bosch ME9.8 also listed | A separate application from the early truck PCM. |
Earlier Ford EEC and later Bosch ME9-family hardware are both catalogued. A rattle or VCT code is not proof of a failed PCM: verify oil pressure and the mechanical timing drive first. Match the complete Ford engineering/service number, supplier hardware ID and diagnostic strategy/calibration ID. The same engine size can use different modules; processor names alone do not identify an ECU.
Catalogue entries identify application families, not a guaranteed ECU for every build year. Confirm the installed unit.
Common faults & maintenance
- Early two-piece spark plugs. TSB 08-7-6 covers affected 5.4L three-valve engines built before October 9, 2007. Improper removal can leave part of the plug in the head; follow the prescribed procedure.
- Phaser / timing-drive problems. Persistent rattle, hot-idle roughness and cam-control codes need oil-pressure and timing diagnosis. TSB 12-7-10 describes relevant affected F-150 conditions.
- Ignition and oil-service neglect. Worn plugs, coil faults and low or unsuitable oil can worsen running and cam-control symptoms. Diagnose a repeated misfire rather than driving through it.
Keep it healthy. Use the Ford oil specification and viscosity for the exact model year. Follow the normal or severe-use schedule for towing, extended idling, dust and repeated short trips; check oil and coolant between services. Diagnose deposits or poor running before prescribing cleaning intervals.

Listed vehicles are selected North American applications. Ratings and equipment vary with model year, fuel and emissions specification. Verify the VIN, engine label and PCM identification before ordering parts or software. Service bulletins describe affected conditions and do not establish a failure rate or current warranty entitlement.
