1.6L Turbo Diesel LH7
The LH7 gives the Terrain, Equinox and Cruze 240 lb-ft from a quiet, compact diesel four-cylinder. Its emissions controls and E98 electronics make software and sensor checks an important part of diagnosis.

Engine construction
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Capacity / layout | 1.6L · inline-four |
| Construction | Aluminum block and head |
| Valve gear | DOHC · 16 valves |
| Fuel / induction | Common-rail direct injection · variable-geometry turbo |
| Emissions | EGR · DPF · SCR/DEF |
| Oil specification | dexos2-approved 5W-30 in the original service guidance |
Codes & output
| RPO / version | Power / torque | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| LH7 | 137 hp / 240 lb-ft | North American factory rating |
SAE horsepower; torque in lb-ft. Ratings are for the stated application and fuel, rather than every vehicle with this RPO.
Vehicles & model years
| Brand | Model | Model years | Platform / chassis | Engine RPO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GMC / Chevrolet | Terrain / Equinox | 2018–2019 | D2XX | LH7 |
| Chevrolet | Cruze sedan / hatchback diesel | 2017–2019; body availability varies | D2XX | LH7 |
U.S. and Canadian applications within the 2005–2026 matrix scope. Engine availability depends on trim, build date and emissions certification.
Engine controllers
| Application / revision | ECM or PCM | Identification & function |
|---|---|---|
| LH7 diesel | GM/Delco E98 ECM | Injection, VGT, stop/start and exhaust-treatment coordination |
| Emissions diagnostics | ECM plus reductant/sensor modules | Check installed software and campaign completion before replacing particulate-matter or DEF components |
Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.
Common issues & maintenance
- 2018 emissions-software campaignGM 18-NA-030 describes a software fault affecting particulate-matter-sensor diagnosis. Confirm campaign 17337 status when relevant exhaust or communication codes appear.
- DEF refill / quality-sensor warningsAeration after filling can temporarily affect the quality reading. Use fresh correct DEF, fill with the ignition off and diagnose persistent P206B rather than immediately replacing the tank.
- Soot and boost-related performance lossEGR deposits, charge-air leakage and interrupted regeneration can reduce performance. Confirm airflow and exhaust-pressure data before authorizing cleaning or major parts.
Keep it healthy. Follow the model-year diesel oil and fuel-filter schedule. Keep DEF clean, use winter-appropriate fuel and respond to regeneration messages. Persistent rattling, low oil level or coolant loss needs investigation rather than a longer oil-change interval.
