EA888 Gen 42.0T EVO4

The EVO4 does its best work across a wide rev range: quick response in a GTI, strong top-end pull in a Golf R and relaxed torque in an Audi or Macan. Direct injection at up to 350 bar, careful heat control and power-class-specific hardware let the same 2.0-litre architecture serve very different cars.

Common faults & maintenance

  • Oil specification & level. Use the exact approval stated for the vehicle. A GTI, Golf R and Audi can require different oils despite sharing the EVO4 family name.
  • Cooling-system leaks. Inspect the pump, thermostat module and connections if coolant drops. Diagnose leakage or temperature-control faults before overheating develops.
  • PCV & boost control. Rough idle, oil leaks or reduced boost need testing of crankcase ventilation, charge-air plumbing and wastegate operation.
  • Ignition & fuel pressure. Follow the specified plug interval. Diagnose misfires and pressure faults promptly; incorrect plugs or repeated misfiring can cause further damage.
  • Deposits & airflow. Check filters and intake condition when performance changes. Intake-valve cleaning should follow inspection, not a universal mileage rule.
  • VIN-specific campaigns. Check open recalls and service actions, including engine-cover action 10H9 on applicable VW models. Software-related faults require the correct diagnostic procedure.

Keep it healthy. Let oil warm before sustained boost. After hard use, finish with gentle driving and follow the owner’s manual. Frequent short trips, towing and high temperatures can call for closer monitoring and shorter service intervals.
