Two small turbochargers give the N54 strong torque early in the rev range. Piezo direct injection and double VANOS support everything from the original 300 hp 335i to the sharper factory calibrations in the 335is and 1 Series M Coupe.

Engine controllers · MSD80 & MSD81
The MSD controllers manage piezo injectors, ignition, fuel pressure, boost and VANOS. The hardware change occurred during N54 production, so an early car may now carry a replacement MSD81.

For E8x/E9x, March 2008 is a production-date distinction, not a whole-model-year rule. Record the hardware and ROM/software IDs; injector calibration values and immobilizer matching remain vehicle-specific.

Some performance versions temporarily reach 369 lb-ft using overboost. Canadian availability and model-year transitions should be checked by VIN.
Common issues & key risks
High-pressure fuel pump. Long cranking, reduced power and fuel-pressure faults are familiar warning signs. Compare commanded and actual rail pressure before condemning the pump.
Leaking injectors. Rough cold starts, repeated cylinder misfires and fuel-contaminated oil need investigation. Check injector condition, compatibility and calibration when replacing them.
Wastegate wear & boost leaks. Worn wastegate hardware can rattle and cause underboost. Test vacuum lines and charge-pipe connections before assuming both turbos need replacement.
Intake-valve carbon. Deposits can cause rough idle and loss of performance. Inspect the valves and clean when deposit-related symptoms justify it.
Cooling & oil leaks. Electric-pump failure can cause rapid overheating. Valve-cover and oil-filter-housing leaks are also recurring repairs; keep oil off the belt and address temperature warnings immediately.
Keep it consistent: Use the specified oil approval and spark plugs, monitor fuel-pressure and boost faults, and let oil temperature rise before applying sustained load.
