EA897 3.0 V6 TDI

The EA897’s appeal is torque: 406–428 lb-ft from a smooth, compact V6. Common-rail injection, a variable-geometry turbo and carefully controlled cooling give this 3.0-litre diesel its character in everything from the Audi A6 to the Porsche Cayenne.

The shared ECU family does not make controllers interchangeable. Match the VIN, engine code and full hardware/software IDs before replacement or programming.

Care & trouble spots

  • Oil and intervals. Use the approval listed above and follow mileage and time limits. Severe cold, dusty conditions and demanding use may call for earlier service; check the oil level between changes.
  • Intake and EGR. Deposits can restrict airflow. Diagnose flap operation, EGR flow and boost leaks before cleaning or replacing parts.
  • EGR temperature sensor. Audi documented intermittent sensor faults on certain 2014–2015 CPNA, CPNB and CNRB vehicles. Match the fault and VIN before ordering parts.
  • Cooling and leaks. Investigate coolant loss, unusual temperatures and oil leaks promptly. Locate the source before replacing a cooler, pump or seal.
  • Fuel system. Keep fuel-filter servicing current. Hard starting or low rail pressure needs proper supply, pump and injector testing.
  • DPF and DEF. Check sensor readings, soot/ash loading and SCR operation when warnings appear. Use the correct AdBlue fluid and address restart warnings promptly.
  • Turbo and timing drive. Warm up gently and let temperatures settle after sustained heavy loads. Investigate new chain noise, oil-pressure warnings or changes in boost response.

Inspect first; clean as needed. Base intake and EGR cleaning on deposits, symptoms and service history. There is no universal 80,000 km cleaning interval.
