BMW N62 4.4 & 4.8 V8: Specs, Engine Codes, ECUs & Maintenance

N62
4.4 & 4.8 V8 · Naturally aspirated · Valvetronic
The N62 uses variable valve lift and intake tuning to deliver a broad, quiet V8 powerband. Its 4.4-litre and later 4.8-litre versions powered BMW’s larger sedans, coupes and SUVs, with several important changes in their control electronics.

The N62’s DME works with a separate Valvetronic control unit. It coordinates ignition, injection, camshaft timing and torque demand, while the valve-lift electronics operate the eccentric-shaft motors.
| Controller | Applications & timing | Technical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| ME9.2 | Initial E65/E66 745i/Li, model years 2002–2003 | Original N62 control system with a separate Valvetronic module. |
| ME9.2.1 | Later original-N62 applications, including 2004-era 545i/645Ci/745i and E53 X5 | Revised original-engine electronics; exact hardware depends on production date. |
| ME9.2.2 | Early N62TU 550i/650i/750i, principally 2006–2007 | Updated processor, air-mass and oxygen-sensor interfaces, plus revised oil-level processing. |
| ME9.2.3 | E70 X5 4.8i from 2007; BMW also lists model-year 2008 E60/E63/E64/E65/E66 applications | Later N62TU controller. Confirm the full suffix when matching software or replacement hardware. |
ME9.2.x describes several versions, not one interchangeable ECU. BMW bulletin B12 50 06 distinguishes the .2 and .3 applications. DME and Valvetronic faults should be evaluated together.

| X5 4.8i / xDrive48i | E70 | 2007–2010 | N62B48TU · 350 hp / 350 lb-ft |
SUV ratings differ from sedan/coupe ratings. The earlier E53 X5 4.8is has a distinct 4.8-litre specification and is not grouped with the TU figures above.
Common issues & key risks
Valve-stem seals. Hardened seals let oil enter the combustion chambers, often producing blue smoke after idling and increased oil consumption. Rule out breather faults and external leaks during diagnosis.
Coolant-transfer pipe. The pipe’s internal seals can leak, with coolant escaping near the front timing cover. Pressure-test and identify the source before replacing external cooling parts.
Alternator-bracket seal. This small seal can cause a substantial oil leak behind the bracket. Trace fresh oil carefully because nearby cover leaks can disguise the source.
Cover gaskets & PCV. Valve-cover and upper timing-cover seals deteriorate with heat and age. Whistling or abnormal crankcase vacuum calls for a breather-system check too.
Valvetronic faults. Rough running and valve-lift faults require checks of eccentric-shaft feedback, motors and power supply. Complete the specified diagnosis and adaptations before replacing assemblies.
Keep it consistent: Maintain the specified oil level and approval, address oil or coolant loss early, and base repairs on a confirmed diagnosis.
