Gen V EcoTec3 6.2L V8 L87
The L87 pairs 6.2L V8 output with Dynamic Fuel Management and GM’s newer truck and SUV electronics. It delivers strong effortless torque, while correct build identification matters for service parts, ECM calibration and recall checks.

Codes & output
| RPO / version | Power / torque | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| L87 | 420 hp / 460 lb-ft | Gasoline rating |
SAE horsepower; torque in lb-ft. Ratings are for the stated application and fuel, rather than every vehicle with this RPO.
Vehicles & model years
| Brand | Model | Model years | Platform / chassis | Engine RPO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GMC / Chevrolet | Sierra / Silverado 1500 6.2 | 2019–2026 | T1XX | L87 |
| GMC | Yukon / XL 6.2, including Denali / selected AT4 | 2021–2026 | T1XX | L87 |
| Chevrolet | Tahoe / Suburban 6.2 | 2021–2026 | T1XX | L87 |
| Cadillac | Escalade / ESV 6.2 naturally aspirated | 2021–2026 | T1XX | L87 |
U.S. and Canadian applications within the 2005–2026 matrix scope. Engine availability depends on trim, build date and emissions certification.
Engine controllers
| Application / revision | ECM or PCM | Identification & function |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier T1XX pickups | GM E90 ECM · earlier architecture | Direct injection, DFM, VVT and torque management |
| 2021+ SUVs / refreshed 2022.5+ pickups | GM E90 ECM · Global B generation | Secure vehicle-network integration; confirm module hardware and operating system |
Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.
Common issues & maintenance
- Crankshaft / connecting-rod recallRecall 25V274 covers certain 2021–2024 L87 vehicles for manufacturing defects that can cause engine damage and loss of propulsion. Check the VIN through GM and the applicable U.S./Canadian recall system.
- Lifter and spring faultsA persistent tick or misfire needs valvetrain inspection; GM also documented spring faults on specified earlier builds.
- Injector / pressure faultsCylinder tests and scan data distinguish ignition, fuel delivery and mechanical causes of rough running.
Keep it healthy. Check oil level between services and stop for abnormal knocking or an oil-pressure warning. Follow the current VIN-specific service and recall instructions, including any revised oil label; a generic oil recommendation cannot replace the recall remedy.
