BMW S68 4.4 Twin Turbo V8: Specs, Hybrid Versions, ECU & Maintenance

BMW · Engine information · U.S. & Canada

S68

4.4 twin turbo · V8 power with electric assistance

The S68 combines a hot-V twin-turbo layout with electrification. Mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid models use the engine differently, so the V8’s own output must be kept separate from the combined drivetrain figure.

The S68 uses Bosch’s DME9 platform with two bank controllers. Beyond injection, ignition, boost and valve control, the engine electronics must coordinate torque delivery with the electrified transmission. Hybrid battery condition and thermal limits can change available drivetrain performance.

DME9 is not MG1CS024. Confirm both controller identities and vehicle software integration before replacement or programming; shared S68 branding does not make mild-hybrid and plug-in calibrations interchangeable.

Figures for plug-in models distinguish combustion-engine output from combined system output. Peak engine and motor ratings cannot simply be added.

Known issues & key checks

Long-term failure patterns are still developing. These are documented service concerns and practical checks.

Valvetronic software fault. On specified 2023–2026-built X5 M/X6 M vehicles, false short-circuit detection can trigger a drive-system warning and misfires. BMW specifies a software remedy; replacing valve-control parts does not fix this particular fault.

Cranks but will not start. Eligible applications have a documented fuel-pump-controller communication fault. Check the IFM/TFE service action and software before replacing a pump.

Coolant & ignition checks. Investigate coolant loss in the engine and charge-cooling circuits. Misfires need plug, coil and fuel-pressure diagnosis, alongside software checks.

Hybrid-related reduced power. Read engine, transmission and hybrid faults together. The same dashboard warning can have different causes, and the repair depends on the model’s hybrid system.

Keep it consistent: Follow the exact model’s fluid approvals, running-in requirements and service plan. Hybrid-system work requires the procedures and qualifications appropriate to its voltage system.
