EA888 Gen 12.0T TSI / TFSI
The Gen 1 EA888 is the familiar 200-hp turbo four behind a long list of Volkswagen and Audi models. Its low-speed torque suits a GTI as naturally as a Tiguan. CCTA and CBFA share the core design; emissions equipment is the key difference between them.

Common faults & maintenance
- Chain & tensioner. Early tensioners can allow the chain to jump. Startup rattle, timing faults or a sudden no-start require prompt inspection; avoid repeated cranking.
- Oil service. Use the specified VW approval and check the level regularly. Match the interval to time, distance and operating conditions.
- PCV & oil leaks. A failed breather can upset idle and crankcase pressure. Diagnose ventilation alongside oil leaks, including the rear main seal.
- Intake manifold. Deposits or sticking flaps can affect airflow. Check the linkage, actuator and fault codes; clean intake valves when inspection supports it.
- Cooling system. Water-pump or thermostat-area leaks deserve attention before coolant loss becomes overheating. Use the prescribed coolant.
- Misfires & boost. Check plugs, coils, fuel pressure and boost leaks before condemning the turbo. Continued misfiring can damage the catalyst.
Keep it healthy. Keep oil and coolant levels stable, use gentle load while warming up and investigate new noises early. Intake cleaning is condition-based; no single mileage interval guarantees freedom from deposits.
