Ford EcoBoost 2.3L Gen 1: Specs, PCM, Vehicles & Maintenance
Ford · Gasoline engine
EcoBoost 2.3LMustang · Focus RS · Explorer
One displacement, three very different jobs: Mustang performance, Focus RS pace and Explorer hauling. Turbo, cooling and calibration details matter as much as the 2.3L badge.

Vehicles & factory output
| Engine variant | Vehicle | Model years | Platform | Factory rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mustang 2.3L | Ford Mustang EcoBoost | 2015–2017 | S550 | 310 hp / 320 lb-ft |
| Mustang 2.3L | Ford Mustang EcoBoost | 2018–2023 | S550 | 310 hp / 350 lb-ft |
| RS 2.3L | Ford Focus RS | 2016–2018 | C1 | 350 hp / 350 lb-ft |
| Explorer 2.3L | Ford Explorer | 2016–2019 | D4 | 280 hp / 310 lb-ft |
Standard Mustang ratings are shown; the later High Performance Package differs. The earlier Mustang’s torque is 320 lb-ft, not the later 350-lb-ft rating.
Engine controller
| Application | Supplier & family | Hardware / identification |
|---|---|---|
| Mustang · earlier S550 2.3L | Bosch MEDG17.0 | TC1797; later S550 listings also include MG1CS017 / TC298. |
| Focus RS · 2016–2018 | Bosch MEDG17.0 catalogue family | TC1797; EVC lists MED17.2.2 V3 for the RS. |
| Explorer · 2016–2019 | Bosch MEDG17.0 | TC1797; distinct vehicle calibration. |
The Focus RS calibration also coordinates torque with its AWD system. The S550 table must not be used to identify the redesigned S650 engine or its later EMS controller. Match the complete Ford engineering/service number, supplier hardware ID and diagnostic strategy/calibration ID. The same engine size can use different modules; processor names alone do not identify an ECU.
Catalogue entries identify application families, not a guaranteed ECU for every build year. Confirm the installed unit.
Common faults & maintenance
- Focus RS head gasket. Program 17B32 addresses certain 2016–2017 Focus RS builds. Check the repair history if coolant falls, white smoke appears or the engine misfires. This is not a blanket diagnosis for every 2.3L.
- Oil leakage. Ford SSM 47443 identifies leakage concerns on certain 2016–2018 Focus RS engines. Inspect the actual source instead of assuming smoke means turbo failure.
- Ignition, boost and deposits. Check plugs, coils, charge-air joints and fuel pressure under load. Diagnose intake restriction before cleaning, and avoid heavy boost until the oil reaches operating temperature.
Keep it healthy. Use the Ford oil specification and viscosity for the exact model year. Follow the normal or severe-use schedule for towing, extended idling, dust and repeated short trips; check oil and coolant between services. Diagnose deposits or poor running before prescribing cleaning intervals.

Listed vehicles are selected North American applications. Ratings and equipment vary with model year, fuel and emissions specification. Verify the VIN, engine label and PCM identification before ordering parts or software. Service bulletins describe affected conditions and do not establish a failure rate or current warranty entitlement.
