Vortec 4.3L V6 LU3

The LU3 is the familiar workhorse V6 behind many basic GM pickups and vans. Its iron construction, pushrod valve gear and port injection keep it mechanically straightforward, but age-related ignition and fuel-system faults deserve more attention than its modest power rating.

Engine controllers

Application / revisionECM or PCMIdentification & function
2005–2007 pickup applicationsGM P59 / LS1B PCMFuel, ignition and transmission control; exact van hardware must be checked
2008–2013 pickupsGM E37 ECMCAN-based engine management; separate transmission calibration

Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.

Common issues & maintenance

  • Ignition breakdownDistributor cap, rotor, leads and plugs can cause damp-weather misfires; confirm spark quality before replacing injectors.
  • Fuel deliveryHard starting or lean running calls for a fuel-pressure and leak-down test, followed by checks for injector or intake leaks.
  • Oil / coolant leaksInspect aged intake, cover and cooling-system seals. Low fluid levels can turn an inexpensive leak into major engine damage.

Keep it healthy. Keep the ignition system dry and serviced, use the specified oil, and diagnose fuel pressure rather than assuming every hard start is a failed pump. The later LV1 van engine is a different direct-injection design.
