Gen III Vortec 5.3L V8 LM7, L59 & L33
GM’s 5.3L Vortec balances everyday torque with a simple port-injected V8 layout. LM7, flex-fuel L59 and aluminum-block L33 look similar, but fuel compatibility and hardware identification matter when buying an engine or controller.

Engine construction
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Capacity / layout | 5.3L · 90° V8 |
| Block / heads | LM7/L59: iron; L33: aluminum · aluminum heads |
| Valve gear | OHV · 16 valves · no AFM |
| Fuel / induction | Port injection · naturally aspirated |
Codes & output
| RPO / version | Power / torque | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| LM7 | 295 hp / 335 lb-ft | Typical 2005–2006 pickup; gasoline |
| L59 | 295 hp / 335 lb-ft | Flex-fuel variant; verify vehicle E85 approval |
| L33 | 310 hp / 335 lb-ft | Aluminum-block high-output pickup variant |
SAE horsepower; torque in lb-ft. Ratings are for the stated application and fuel, rather than every vehicle with this RPO.
Vehicles & model years
| Brand | Model | Model years | Platform / chassis | Engine RPO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GMC / Chevrolet | Sierra / Silverado 1500 | 2005–2006; 2007 Classic | GMT800 | LM7 / L59; L33 on selected trucks |
| GMC / Chevrolet | Yukon / Tahoe / Suburban / Avalanche | 2005–2006 | GMT800 | LM7 / L59, by trim |
| GMC / Chevrolet | Savana / Express | 2005–2006 | GMT610 | LM7 |
U.S. and Canadian applications within the 2005–2026 matrix scope. Engine availability depends on trim, build date and emissions certification.
Engine controllers
| Application / revision | ECM or PCM | Identification & function |
|---|---|---|
| Gen III truck applications | GM P59 PCM · LS1B family | Fuel, spark, electronic-throttle and flex-fuel calibration vary by RPO; retain the correct throttle/pedal and fuel system |
Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.
Common issues & maintenance
- Intake / knock-sensor sealingLean codes or knock-sensor faults need leak, harness and moisture checks before parts replacement.
- Oil consumption / leaksInspect PCV flow and cover sealing, then measure consumption. GM’s diagnostic guidance distinguishes external loss from internal wear.
- Oil-pressure / misfire diagnosisVerify actual oil pressure; test ignition and injector operation on the affected cylinder. These engines do not have AFM lifters.
Keep it healthy. Use the oil grade and specification in the model-year owner’s manual. Check the dipstick between services; towing, idling and short trips change oil-life demands. Repair coolant leaks promptly, keep the cooling stack clear and investigate a new tick or misfire before it damages the camshaft or catalyst.
