The S63’s cross-bank exhaust arrangement feeds its twin-scroll turbochargers with carefully separated exhaust pulses. Its revisions span several generations of M cars, bringing different injection systems, controllers and power levels.

The controller changes are tied to engine hardware, not simply advertised horsepower. TU engines use a controller for each bank; DME 1 coordinates shared information and passes it to DME 2. Both units and their cooling system belong in a complete diagnosis.

Read both DMEs and confirm the full engine code and software level. Base, Competition and special-edition calibrations can share a controller family without sharing output limits.

Common issues & key risks

Expansion-tank leaks. Documented on F90/F9x applications: the tank material can deteriorate, causing coolant loss. Inspect promptly and follow BMW’s precautions to keep coolant out of the injector area.

Oil consumption. Valve-stem-seal faults are documented on earlier E70/E71 M applications. Smoke and oil use also require checks of ventilation and turbo sealing; later S63 revisions need their own diagnosis.

Injectors & misfires. Faulty injectors can produce rough running, poor starts or fuel dilution. Check plugs, coils, fuel pressure and cylinder-specific data before replacing injectors.

Turbo lubrication. Restricted feed or return lines can damage a turbocharger. New turbo noise or lost boost needs an oil-supply and charge-system inspection.

Heat-aged hoses & seals. Check turbo coolant connections, breather hoses and cover seals for leaks. Address falling fluid levels before sustained high-load use.

Keep it consistent: Use approved fluids and the prescribed running-in service where applicable. Track use and repeated high-temperature operation call for a maintenance plan suited to that load.
