Gen V EcoTec3 5.3L V8 L82 & L84
L82 and L84 share a 5.3L direct-injected V8 foundation, but use different cylinder-deactivation strategies. The L84’s Dynamic Fuel Management and newer vehicle electronics make build-date and ECM identification especially important.

Engine construction
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Capacity / layout | 5.3L · 90° V8 |
| Construction | Aluminum block and heads |
| Valve gear | OHV · 2 valves per cylinder · variable cam timing |
| Fuel / induction | Direct injection · naturally aspirated |
| Valves | 16 |
| Cylinder strategy | L82: AFM configuration · L84: DFM; some builds have factory omissions |
| Bore × stroke / compression | 96 × 92 mm · 11.0:1 (L84) |
Codes & output
| RPO / version | Power / torque | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| L82 | 355 hp / 383 lb-ft | Entry-level T1XX pickup version |
| L84 | 355 hp / 383 lb-ft | DFM-equipped configuration; check actual build content |
SAE horsepower; torque in lb-ft. Ratings are for the stated application and fuel, rather than every vehicle with this RPO.
Vehicles & model years
| Brand | Model | Model years | Platform / chassis | Engine RPO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GMC / Chevrolet | Sierra / Silverado 1500 | 2019–2021, selected builds | T1XX | L82 |
| GMC / Chevrolet | Sierra / Silverado 1500 | 2019–2026 | T1XX | L84 |
| GMC / Chevrolet | Yukon / Yukon XL / Tahoe / Suburban | 2021–2026 | T1XX | L84 |
U.S. and Canadian applications within the 2005–2026 matrix scope. Engine availability depends on trim, build date and emissions certification.
Engine controllers
| Application / revision | ECM or PCM | Identification & function |
|---|---|---|
| 2019–2021 L84 pickups / earlier Limited builds | GM E90 ECM · earlier vehicle architecture | Direct injection, VVT, DFM and torque management |
| 2021+ SUVs / refreshed 2022.5+ pickups | GM E90 ECM · Global B generation | Same family name does not mean the same security architecture or calibration |
| Selected 2021.5 5.3L pickups | GM E93 ECM | Production exception; identify by VIN and module label rather than displacement alone |
Identify the module from its service number, operating-system ID and VIN. The ECM/PCM and transmission controller have separate calibrations on many applications; a matching RPO alone does not make a replacement module plug-and-play.
Common issues & maintenance
- Lifter / DFM faultsTicking and a cylinder-specific misfire warrant valve-motion and compression checks. Distinguish lifters from ignition or injector faults.
- Valve springsGM documented broken springs on specified 2020–2021 builds. Check build date and the current service procedure.
- Fuel delivery / oil conditionInvestigate injector leakage, pressure faults and fuel dilution; do not keep driving with a persistent misfire.
Keep it healthy. Follow the vehicle-specific oil specification and oil-life monitor, with checks between changes. Factory cylinder-deactivation omissions and later injector hardware changes mean replacement parts and ECM calibrations must be matched to the VIN.
