Ford Cyclone Duratec 35 3.5L V6: Specs, PCM & Maintenance
Ford · Gasoline engine
Cyclone / Duratec 353.5L · Naturally aspirated V6
The naturally aspirated Cyclone powers both family sedans and the Explorer with a broad, smooth torque curve. Early engines and later Ti-VCT versions share the 3.5L badge, but the cam controls and factory ratings differ. The transverse engine’s internal coolant pump deserves particular attention.

Vehicles & factory output
| Engine variant | Vehicle | Model years | Platform | Factory rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duratec 35 | Ford Fusion Sport | 2010–2012 | CD3 | 263 hp / 249 lb-ft |
| Duratec 35 | Ford Taurus | 2008–2012 | D3 | 263 hp / 249 lb-ft |
| Duratec 35 Ti-VCT | Ford Explorer | 2011–2019 | D4 | 290 hp / 255 lb-ft |
| Duratec 35 Ti-VCT | Ford Taurus | 2013–2019 | D3 | 288 hp / 254 lb-ft |
| Duratec 35 · longitudinal | Ford F-150 | 2015–2017 | P552 | 282 hp / 253 lb-ft |
The transverse installation uses an internal chain-driven coolant pump; the longitudinal F-150 cooling layout differs. Ti-VCT and installation must be identified before ordering engine parts.
Engine controller
| Application | Supplier & family | Hardware / identification |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus / Explorer · naturally aspirated 3.5L | Continental EMS24xx; eSys CBP-A2 also catalogued | EMS24xx uses TC1791. The exact variant depends on vehicle and build. |
| Early Edge / Explorer applications | FoMoCo EEC-VI catalogue family | Early entries and later EMS variants are both recorded. |
| Fusion Sport · 2010–2012 | Ford PCM · exact subtype not confirmed | Use the installed label and strategy; EMS2211 is not verified for this application. |
The PCM controls the throttle, sequential port injection and cam timing where fitted. An EcoBoost MED/MG1 file must never be selected for the naturally aspirated engine. Match the complete Ford engineering/service number, supplier hardware ID and diagnostic strategy/calibration ID. The same engine size can use different modules; processor names alone do not identify an ECU.
Catalogue entries identify application families, not a guaranteed ECU for every build year. Confirm the installed unit.
Common faults & maintenance
- Internal water pump. Unexplained coolant loss, pump leakage or contaminated oil needs prompt diagnosis. This pump sits behind the timing cover, so repair labour and contamination risks are significant.
- Ignition faults. On affected early Taurus engines, TSB 12-8-17 covers coil damage and PCM faults. On any version, isolate the misfiring cylinder before replacing parts.
- Timing and VCT. Persistent start-up rattle or cam-correlation codes require checks of oil supply, chain condition and cam control.
Keep it healthy. Use the Ford oil specification and viscosity for the exact model year. Follow the normal or severe-use schedule for towing, extended idling, dust and repeated short trips; check oil and coolant between services. Diagnose deposits or poor running before prescribing cleaning intervals.

Listed vehicles are selected North American applications. Ratings and equipment vary with model year, fuel and emissions specification. Verify the VIN, engine label and PCM identification before ordering parts or software. Service bulletins describe affected conditions and do not establish a failure rate or current warranty entitlement.
