Porsche M96 3.6: Specs, Engine Codes, ECUs & Maintenance
Porsche · Engine Information · U.S. & Canada
M96 3.6 · Carrera Flat-SixThe 3.6-litre Carrera engine brought VarioCam Plus and stronger everyday performance to the 996, then continued in the early 997. Its compact integrated-sump design differs from the Mezger engine used in the Turbo and GT3, so maintenance advice must follow the engine code.

Vehicles & model years
| Models | Platform | Model years | Engine codes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 911 Carrera / Carrera 4 / Targa; Carrera 4S | 996 | 2002–2004; 4S through 2005 | M96.03 |
| 911 Carrera / Carrera 4 / Targa 4 | 997.1 | 2005–2008; AWD from 2006; Targa from 2007 | M96.05 |
Original 2003–2005 North American Carrera releases list 315 SAE hp; some earlier literature uses 320 hp. The 997.1 3.6 is rated 325 hp. The 2004 40th Anniversary power-kit model is a separate 345 hp calibration.
Engine controllers
| Application | DME / ECU | Identification details |
|---|---|---|
| 996 3.6 Carrera | Bosch ME7.8 | Match the DME label and Porsche part number to M96.03. |
| 997.1 3.6 Carrera | Bosch ME7.8.1 | M96.05 application; hardware and calibration vary. |
Tool catalogues group these under ST10/C167-class hardware. The engine badge alone does not establish the installed microcontroller or flash layout.
Common issues & maintenance
Bearing failure is a documented M96 concern. The enlarged later bearing usually requires engine disassembly for replacement; identify the actual engine build.
Oil consumption, uneven tailpipe soot or knocking justify a borescope inspection. A symptom is not proof of scoring, and failure rates are not uniform.
Cracked coil housings can admit moisture and cause misfires. Porsche issued revised diagnosis and replacement guidance.
Use the specified Porsche-approved oil, check level and consumption regularly, and warm the oil before high rpm. A purchase inspection should include engine history, fault codes and a cylinder inspection when symptoms justify it.
