Duratec 232.3L · Inline-four

The original Fusion’s 2.3L Duratec is a straightforward daily-driver engine: no turbo, port injection and a chain-driven DOHC cylinder head. It delivers its best work with a healthy cooling system, clean intake path and consistent oil service.

Fusion, Focus ST and Ranger use different installations and calibrations. The Ranger row gives the verified 2005 example, not one rating for its entire production run.

Match the complete Ford engineering/service number, supplier hardware ID and diagnostic strategy/calibration ID. The same engine size can use different modules; processor names alone do not identify an ECU.

Catalogue entries identify application families, not a guaranteed ECU for every build year. Confirm the installed unit.

Common faults & maintenance

  • Lean or unstable idle. Inspect PCV hoses, intake seals and throttle operation; use fault codes and fuel trims to distinguish an air leak from a fuelling problem.
  • Ignition wear. Worn plugs or weak coils can produce load-related misfires. Diagnose the affected cylinder before replacing parts.
  • Oil and cooling service. Low oil can upset cam control and chain tensioning. Track any oil use or coolant loss rather than topping up repeatedly.

Keep it healthy. Use the Ford oil specification and viscosity for the exact model year. Follow the normal or severe-use schedule for towing, extended idling, dust and repeated short trips; check oil and coolant between services. Diagnose deposits or poor running before prescribing cleaning intervals.

Listed vehicles are selected North American applications. Ratings and equipment vary with model year, fuel and emissions specification. Verify the VIN, engine label and PCM identification before ordering parts or software. Service bulletins describe affected conditions and do not establish a failure rate or current warranty entitlement.
