The S54 rewards revs. Six individual throttle butterflies, mechanical valve adjustment and double VANOS give this iron-block inline-six its immediate response and distinctive high-speed character.

The S54’s DME coordinates the linked throttle butterflies, ignition, injection and high-pressure VANOS system. Its electronics changed substantially between the E46 M3 and Z4 M.

Check the actual DME label and software ID at the MSS54/MSS54HP transition. ECU generation, transmission coding and immobilizer matching all matter when replacing a unit.

Common issues & key risks
Rod-bearing wear. A major ownership check, especially when repair history is unknown. Review bearing-service records and discuss inspection with an S54 specialist; a quiet engine does not prove healthy bearings.
VANOS drive hardware. Exhaust-hub drive tabs can break and cam-sprocket bolts can loosen. New rattles or timing faults deserve prompt mechanical inspection.
VANOS solenoids & seals. Solenoid-pack electrical faults, sticking valves and leaking seals can cause hesitation, reduced torque and cam-control codes. Diagnose the failed component before replacing the whole assembly.
Oil leaks. Inspect the valve-cover perimeter and VANOS oil feed for seepage or a burning-oil smell. Repair leaks and maintain the correct oil level.
Valve clearances. Clearances need scheduled checking and adjustment; this engine has no hydraulic self-adjustment. Keep the model-specific Inspection service history current.
Keep it consistent: Allow oil temperature to rise before using high rpm. Follow the model-specific Inspection service schedule and investigate new mechanical noise promptly.
