The MSS52 DME manages both cylinder banks, injection, ignition, electronic throttle actuation and all four VANOS-controlled camshafts. Bank-to-bank air measurement and adaptation data are useful when diagnosing uneven running.

Both applications use MSS52. Check the BMW hardware/programmed part number, software level and immobilizer alignment before replacement.

Common issues & key risks
VANOS seals & rattle. Ageing seals reduce cam-control performance; worn internal components can rattle. Diagnose low-rpm hesitation, bank-to-bank differences and cam-position faults together.
Timing-chain guides. Plastic guides can deteriorate with age. Persistent chain noise or plastic debris in the oil filter calls for inspection before the chain loses control.
Cooling-system deterioration. Pump, thermostat, radiator and hose faults can cause leaks or overheating. Pressure-test unexplained coolant loss and investigate temperature changes early.
Air leaks & metering. Rough idle and uneven bank fuel corrections call for intake-leak and airflow-meter checks. Compare both banks before replacing sensors.
Oil leaks. Inspect cover seals and the engine underside, and track oil use between services. Repair leaks rather than relying on repeated top-ups.
Keep it consistent: Use the oil specified for the model and build date, warm the oil before high rpm, and keep inspection records for this ageing performance engine.
